Preventing Shoulder Injuries

Your shoulders get worked out every single day because they move every single time you move. You utilize them for reaching, throwing, and lifting all sorts of things. You can do all these since healthy shoulders have an excellent range of motion, which is a great thing. On the other hand, all these movements also mean that there are plenty of things that could harm your shoulders.

The great news is that you can treat shoulder issues with proper treatment under the guidance of your orthopaedist, Dr. Alexander Martusiewicz of Beaumont Orthopaedic Associates, in our Taylor MI or Canton MI locations. Still, it’s better to avoid issues in the first place, using these preventive measures:

  • Keep your body in shape. A healthy diet and regular exercise will go a long way towards ensuring that your body is capable of protecting itself from various injuries.
  • Always use proper posture when standing or sitting down.
  • Use proper form when exercising, even if you’re only doing bodyweight workouts. Always warm-up before working out and do cool down exercises after. Begin slowly if you’ve been sedentary for most of the day.
  • Protect your shoulders at work. This means using protective gear when necessary, stretching at certain times, and not overworking your shoulders. If you spend a chunk of your time over a desk, ensure that your workstation is properly set up for comfort.
  • Lift properly. Never lift too much and always keep your core engaged and your back aligned. Stretch, move around, and take sufficient breaks to avoid overloading your shoulders.
  • Always listen to what your body’s telling you. Don’t ignore unexpected and significant soreness or pain if they occur following any activity that engaged your shoulders. Don’t just tough it out. Consult with your orthopedist in our Taylor MI or Canton MI office right away.
  • Avoid straining to reach things. Opt for a step stool or ladder when reaching for things in high places.

If you do injure your shoulder, consider these tips:

  • Rest your affected shoulder and apply an ice pack on it every couple of hours.
  • Consult your doctor for recommendations on suitable OTC pain medications and safe stretching exercises you can do.
  • Refrain from wearing a sling, unless your doctor advises you to do so.
